How a WhatsApp link works
WhatsApp has its own click-to-chat address. Open https://wa.me/919876543210 and a chat with that number opens — on the phone app or on WhatsApp Web — without either side saving the other as a contact. That is the whole trick, and it is why these links sit on menus, shop boards, invoices and Instagram bios.
The number has to be in international format: country code first, no plus sign, no leading zero, no spaces or dashes. An Indian number written as 098765 43210 becomes 919876543210. Get this wrong and WhatsApp simply says the number is invalid — it does not tell you why.
Adding ?text= puts a message in their typing box. It is not sent for them; they read it and press send. Good first messages name the thing they were looking at — “I want to order the thali combo” beats “Hi”, because it saves you asking.

What is a wa.me link?
It is WhatsApp's own click-to-chat link. Opening it starts a chat with a number without either person saving the other's contact. The format is https://wa.me/ followed by the number in international format, with no plus sign and no leading zero.
How do I write an Indian number in a WhatsApp link?
Put the country code in front and drop the plus and any leading zero. A number like 098765 43210 becomes 919876543210, so the link is https://wa.me/919876543210.
Can I add a message that is already typed?
